YOUR EYES

Words and Music by Uncle John

Walking by the seashore

Discover what you’re here for

Come together as our hearts see

We’re in the groove singing free

I miss your voice

I miss your music

I miss you like I do

I wish as I watch the stars at night

For this dream of mine to come true

I look into many eyes yet none shine like you

Like the star you are

With your secret songs

Built-in guitar

I wonder where you are

Like the sun in you

With wind and light

On the shore under the moon tonight

Like a circle come complete

In the canyon your sound so bright

Stars of inspiration help me write

Your eyes are full of life and light

Of the universe every night

Walking by the seashore

Discover what you're here for

You show me like you do

On the day love is born

All your heart can see

No one’s ever loved anybody

In the way God loves you and me

MY SISTERS AND BROTHERS

Words and Music by Charles Johnson

I wanna say to my sisters and my brothers

Keep the faith

When the storm flies and the wind blows

Go at a steady pace

When the battle is fought and the victories won

We can all shout together

We have overcome

We'll talk to the Father and the Son

When we make it to the Promised Land

We walk together little children

We don't ever have to worry

Through this world of trouble

We've got to love one another

Then let's take a fellow man by the hand

Try to help him to understand

We can all be together forever and ever

When we make it to the Promised land

Oh Bar-ba-rians thou shalt not be afraid

Of the terror by night

Or the arrow that flies by day

Nor for the pestilence that walketh in the darkness

Nor for the destruction

That waits in the noon-day hour

We walk together little children

We don't ever have to worry

Through this world of trouble

We've got to love one another

Then let's take a fellow man by the hand

Try to help him to understand

We can all be together forever and ever

When we make it to the Promised land

This world is not our home

We're only passing through

Our train is all made up

Way beyond the blue

Let us do the very best that we can

While we're traveling through this land

We can all be together shakin' our hand

When we make it to the Promised Land

When we make it to the Promised Land

Make it to the Promised Land

We make it to the Promised Land

Make it to the Promised Land

When we make it to the Promised Land

Make it to the Promised Land

We can all be together forever and ever

When we make it to the Promised Land

MIDNIGHT MOONLIGHT

Words and Music by Peter Rowan

If you ever feel lonesome

And you're down in San Antone

Beg steal or borrow two nickels or a dime

To call me on the phone

I'll meet you at Alamo Mission

Where we can say our prayers

The Holy Ghost and the Virgin Mother will heal us

As we kneel there

In the moonlight

In the midnight

In the moonlight midnight moonlight

In the moonlight

In the midnight

In the moonlight midnight moonlight

If you ever feel sorrow

For the deeds you have done

With no hope for tomorrow

In the setting of the sun

And the ocean is howling

For the things that might have been

And that last good morning sunrise will be

The brightest you've ever seen

In the moonlight

In the midnight

In the moonlight midnight moonlight

In the moonlight

In the midnight

In the moonlight midnight moonlight

If you ever feel lonesome

And you're down in San Antone

Beg steal or borrow two nickels or a dime

To call me on the phone

I'll meet you at Alamo Mission

Where we can say our prayers

The Holy Ghost and the Virgin Mother will heal us

As we kneel there

In the moonlight

In the midnight

In the moonlight midnight moonlight

In the moonlight

In the midnight

In the moonlight midnight moonlight

WHAT ABOUT

Lyrics: Uncle John

You try to forge ahead

Then you fall behind

Be recreational

All in your mind

You try to hide behind

Any excuse you can find

Just look at you all skin and bones

You can fool yourself

But you can’t be anybody's fool could you Ms. Jones

You pretend you're silly when you're acting unkind

What about me you say spinning through time

You'll always remember o sweet child of mine

You look razor thin I know it's only a line

Think it through while your car waves through the cones

Does it really matter if you don't care Ms. Jones

Well they all try to warn you look ahead

All you got to do is glance in the rear view instead

Flowers growing in the snow is more than just signs

God shows up on your fence and you close the blinds

You tell yourself recreation ain't no crime

You been around the block since you left home

Makeover change set free transformed instantly

What about should you Ms. Jones

You try to forge ahead

Then you fall behind

Be recreational

All in your mind

You try to hide behind

Any excuse you can find

Just look at you all skin and bones

You can fool yourself again and again

But you don't wanna be anybody's fool would you Ms. Jones

GOIN' DOWN THE ROAD...

Traditional, Arrangement by Woody Guthrie

I'm blowin' down the road feelin' bad

Lord I'm goin' down the road feelin' bad

I'm goin' down the road feelin' bad Lord

Lord and I ain't gonna be treated the same old way

I'm goin' where the climate suits my clothes

Lord I'm goin' where the climate suits my clothes

I'm goin' where the climate suits my clothes Lord

Lord I ain't gonna be treated the same old way

I'm blowin' down the road feelin' bad

Lord I'm goin' down the road feelin' bad

I'm goin' down the road feelin' bad Lord

Lord and I ain't gonna be treated the same old way

I'm going where the water tastes like wine

Lord I'm goin' where the water tastes like wine

I'm goin' where the water tastes like wine Lord Lord

I ain't gonna be treated the same old way

I'm blowin' down the road feelin' bad

Lord I'm goin' down the road feelin' bad

I'm goin' down the road feelin' bad Lord

Lord and I ain't gonna be treated the same old way

THE BEAT OF LOVE

Dreams of love are made like this

At night she remembers her last kiss

As he was getting back from the dusty down under

With sand in his ears and heart full of wonder

One day you show

Grateful to get

The moment pressing forward

Weather follows the set

A meteor shower oh what a sight

The moon is sweet and forthright

Not hidden like the fortnight

Makes the stars shine bright tonight

Showing us the sights

In a music band marching

Watching rifles being twirled

Drinking a cup of coffee

In the vacuum capital of the world

Honesty on the marquee

Welcome the windmill girl

Rainbow fog light shining heaven

Showing us each gate and pearl

Down the road the wagon wheel

Rolling into the forest of gnarly burl

Everything we experience

Under the moonlight in our time

On the beach and from above

By the horizon sign

Over the hill & under the rainbow

Past bedtime in our prime

Star of light shine bright

In our heart the beat of love & true

Beauty come from there draws light

When they discover you

God gave each of us a soul and spirit too

Free to change the old familiar becomes wonderful new

First we believe & worship God like no other

Then show service in love we have for one another

Heading for the sea of time and space to be

You always think you're right then made aware & set free

Change the way you think you see

Like a caterpillar transforming life

From the ground to the sky

Returns home in the bye and bye

What can we do for you to open your soul heart's eye

A question burning with light

The answer is truth with insight

Generations & millenniums

Hand down love overflow the cup

Rock 'n roll starts up

Big tides and forest green show up

Small seeds planted on the scene grow up

Star of light shine bright

In our heart the beat of love & true

Beauty come from there draws light

When they discover you

FROM THE HEART OF ME

Lyrics & Music by Donna Jean Godchaux

Voices slide down off the mountain
Sunlight turning red
Falls on the earth and it spreads
Even the families lower their heads
As they ride
Age old faces of the mountains
Looming naturally
I wonder if they're looking at me
Their monumental eyes
I can feel
In the glow of the twilight
The thought of home
Reminds me now I'm reaching out to you
Anything I can do

To be safe and warm
In your arms

All I have from the heart of you
I'd meet you anywhere in the country
Or anywhere on the sea
All over the world it could be
I would follow you with the heart of me

Love calls echo in the valley
Dream come true tonight
Remembering you hold me tight
In tomorrow morning's light
I will find you
When I awoke the stars were out

And shining

Shining for you and me
All I ever wanna be

Is safe and warm

In your arms
All I have

From the heart of me

Is the heart of you

A heart of truth
All I have

From the heart of me
All I have

From the heart of me

TERRAPIN LIGHT

by Uncle John

Out of the darkness

Into the light

Taking a stroll

In the day moonlight

Feeling a change

Lingering in the air

Lets the light shine

Shown you really care

In the night time

Get your rest with peace

And sweet dream

When the morning comes

Your life is moving like a stream

Let your past go

Your memories you care about you share

The wind moves with the air

Let your rain bows

And your sun glow

As the frost governs what you wear

But it ain't that way in Paradise

By the way

In the shadows and the shade

And the great hideaway

Stirs the transformation coming

Yesterdays's gone

Awake our hearts again are smiling

Guardian angels on the bridge

All along the watch and ridge

Slowly breaks the night with the dawn

The bird with a song

Blowing of the horn of the ram

Altogether gather in a terrapin jam

Inspirations moves me bright

The stars with light

The songs with hope and color

The joys of the season in the air

Helping because we care

There to share

Be true and fair

Cast out the sleet of despair

When the horses run at night

And the animals cry in fright

Your rehearsal with full light

Feeds back the sound bite

Life is a balance

Of freedom and locks

Time is ringing

Bells and clocks

Mountains share

The trees and rocks

Water runs

Upstream to docks

Where there are terrapins dancing

To the jams

Past the slough of dams

As the night breaks

Slowly moving waits

The dawn wakes

The birds sing

The bells ring

The light rises

In colorful streams

From sweet peaceful dreams

If I could sing you to sleep tonight

In a rocking chair where you can hold on tight

Safe and secure moving toward light

Let the peace of love reign within you tonight

THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES

CHICKADEE

Review by John Patenaude

Bob Dylan has a providential call to write, play music, sing and dance. In his best-selling book, CHRONICLES, Volume One, he shows he has the same creative spark, the wordsmith ability that no one can duplicate, that he had four decades ago. Every show he plays is distinct, with a different audience, diverse songs, unique to every experience. Rochester, New York is a new location for me, but Dylan is like the sun that comes peeking from a cloud after a rainstorm, a source of inspiration. Even the deaf have an ear to hear what the spirit says tonight.

Adam Williams (manager for Uncle John) and I are in Rochester to see Bob Dylan and Adam’s girl, Marie. Rochester is on the border of Lake Ontario, the third largest city in New York state, home of the Kodak camera, and the singing Chickadee, a distinctive looking bird who communicates by its call, and relays a specific message in its own language. It can sound the alarm to the flock, relay information, and recognizes an individual or a particular flock.

Rochester is home to one of the largest deaf populations in the country. There are street signs alerting drivers to where deaf children play. There are schools that teach in sign language, from kindergarten through college, and the only technical college for the deaf in the country is at Rochester Institute of Technology, and this is where Dylan's show is tonight. Joining the five band members on stage is someone to sign the show, a girl with headphones who interprets all of Dylan's lyrics tonight. The deaf people come to experience the vibrations of each song, and are treated to a passionate presentation of Dylan's lyrics live.

It's a cold and clear autumn night, a new moon on a Saturday night. We're in Gordon Field House, a new gymnasium and comfortable setting for the concert. There are no pay phones, and there is no alcohol here. It’s a breath of fresh air. This is the first Dylan show I been to where people are allowed to bring cameras and take pictures.

Adam and I discuss whether the girl signing can hear all of Dylan's words singing in her headphones, or if the lyrics are on a monitor she can see. I suggest she can hear him much better than we can and knows many if not all of the songs by heart. I don't think Dylan comes to the show with five hundred songs in his pocket, though some people might think that. The hatful he does carry he rehearses and plays well.

Adam points out the sound arrangement for the show, how the speakers are arched and suspended in the air to deflect the warehouse ceiling and create a real good system and positive sound for a basketball gym. Adam wonders if those are beads of sweat on Dylan's face or a reflection from sequins on his shirt.

"Visions of Johanna" is a real treat. Bob loves the song "Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum", based on characters from an old folk tale and story. I was listening to my parents’ radio station play songs from the thirties and forties, and one that caught my ear was a song about 'Tweedle Dee', and I heard the song with new ears tonight. Have you read the lyrics and listened for the phrase?

The acoustic songs he did tonight ("Po' Boy", "Girl of the North Country" & "Ballad of Hollis Brown") are gems. The closers, "Standing In The Doorway", watching the interpreter give his lyrics a new meaning, and "Summer Days", brings out the best. When Dylan emerges from backstage, he's hatless for the first time I see tonight, and his pompadour is prominent. He puts his hat back on and launches into "Like a Rolling Stone", the original version. "All Along the Watchtower" is extraordinary. Adam and I listened to the Jimi Hendrix adaptation earlier on the radio, and Dylan's rendering is better. It's the distinctive reverberation of the music playing. This song is a favorite among musicians because it's easy to perform and works on sound intensity.

We went to see Marie at her parents who are both deaf. Marie, her brother and sister can all hear. Marie never heard of Bob Dylan. She says she first listened to a radio at ten because there were none in her house, and there is a fresh and melodious charm about her. The deaf folks are deliberate, assertive, sensitive and intelligent. Marie tells us her parents read the Bible for two hours every night. As is written, "Eye has not seen nor ear heard, not entered into the heart or conceived by the mind, what has been prepared for those who love God."

The girl who is signing/interpreting Bob's lyrics speaks with deliberate hands, Dylan in her ears. She is like the Chickadee, relaying information, communicating in a special language, identifying with each other, distinctive looking, and transcribing lyrical singing, which transforms into her acting out the message. Oh what a special night! We have the singer, the song and the interpretation/translation.

As soon as Dylan leaves the stage, someone is literally at his ear, & walks with him towards the exit. Bob stops at a computer, & stands there a few minutes & then leaves, with his hat still on. 'Mr. Dylan has left the building' cues the lights on.
